Program of the MOOC
After successfully completing this course, participants will be able to:
Identify the different energies sources, the importance of oil and how it is used in transport and its consequences regarding the environment
Explain the operation of a 4-stroke engine
Explain the specifications of gasoline and diesel and the objectives of each unit during the crude refining process
Explain the engine’s efficiency, the power and the torque
Explain the formation of pollutant emissions, identify the techniques used to reduce emissions and consumption and finally identify the different after treatment systems
List the pros and the cons of hybrids and explain how they work; list the various alternative fuels used, and finally describe possible solutions for reducing dependency on petroleum products –e.g. car sharing or ecodriving.

In this MOOC, you will make the most of the new possibilities offered by MOOC technology. You will experiment with a new interactive way to learn while applying your knowledge to real case studies in a “serious game”, designed specifically for this MOOC!
You will get a glimpse of the life of a new employee in the “MOOC Energy Company”, test an engine at a realistic test bench, optimize gasoline and diesel fuel production in a refinery,…”.
And new this year : you will get a glimpse of our test benches with a virtual reality visit.
You will explore the international energy scene and the global economic environment, so as to better understand the major energy issues.
You will also discover the environmental regulations which work to improve efficiency in the automotive sector.
After a technical introduction to engines, we will study the basic concepts of fuels and refining.
We will take a look at how diesel and gasoline are produced respecting the technical specifications of different countries.
You will first discover engine design and powertrain components.
You will then study the formation of pollutants in engines and the technology used to reduce these emissions such as after-treatment systems.
Finally you will understand how a diesel engine optimization is performed.
This final week will be the opportunity to draw up a panorama of technologies being developed at present.
We will interview experts from IFP Energies nouvelles and ask them to identify technologies worth exploring such as hybrids, biofuels or hydrogen.
We will also cover new initiatives that are being developed such as car sharing, carpooling and smart driving.

Presentation of the faculty
- Nadine Bret-Rouzaut is the Director of the Center for Economics and Management and Professor of Energy Economics with a specialization in the management of oil and gas exploration and production - strategy of the players, profitability studies and cost estimation. Nadine is also coordinator and co-author of the book "Oil and Gas Exploration and Production – Reserves, costs, contracts" published by Éditions Technip.More information on Nadine Bret-Rouzaut
- Arash Farnoosh is the program supervisor of the Master in Petroleum Economics and Management, coordinator of the Executive Master of Management in Energy and Executive Master of International Oil and Gas Leadership. He gives and coordinates courses on power generation, techno-economics in the energy sector and utility management. His main areas of expertise are energy economics and power generation from both conventional and renewable resources and their associated markets.More information on Arash Farnoosh
- Maria Thirouard is a lecturer in the Centre of IC Engine and Hydrocarbon Utilizations. She is in charge of the teaching unit on engine testing within various programs such as Energy and Products and Powertrain Engineering. She also gives courses in Diesel Combustion and Homogeneous Combustion. In the meantime, she is heavily involved in research. Maria contributes to the development of high performance engines and innovative solutions to reduce consumption and pollutant emissions.More information on Maria Thirouard
- Ludivine Pidol holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering. She is a professor in the Centre of IC Engine and Hydrocarbon Utilizations. She coordinates several teaching units within various programs such as Powertrain Engineering. She also gives lessons on Motor Fuels and Lubricants. Her research experience focuses on matching Engines and Fuels in the field of Biodiesel and Biokerosene.More information on Ludivine Pidol
- Olivier Bernaert is a lecturer in the Center for Refining, Petrochemicals and Gas. After years of experience in refineries and refining including a post as head of a process department, he now gives lectures in various topics such as sweetening units, technical assistance in refineries (troubleshooting and unit debottlenecking), energy efficiency in process and physicochemical properties of oil cuts.More information on Olivier Bernaert
- Prakash Dewangan organizes teaching units, projects and class work in the domain of the hybridization and electrification of vehicles for various programs such as Powertrain Engineering and Electrification of Powertrain. When he is not teaching, Prakash Dewangan carries out research on energy management and powertrain controls for hybrid and electric vehicles at the Control, Signals and Systems Department of IFP Energies nouvelles.More information on Prakash Dewangan
- Sidney Lambert-Lalitte is a lecturer specialized in economics and the environment and, in particular, in the tools used to reduce CO2 emissions (carbon markets, environmental tax systems…).
